The increase in ram will really only affect how memory is available for windows and other programs to use. The increase in speed that you get is negligible. If you want a big increase in speed then you need to upgrade the processor.

Well since its an AMD then by experience we know that it has a tendency to heat up a little bit more than intel and others...
You can buy 512 ram and run your machine it would work but it would overclock your processor above normal which might be aweful coz it might burn up!
So as machines are cheap i suggest hunt for a motherboard of the series- (A8M-VN), if you know it supports all processors till the FX series!
You can read the review on AMD site also i own one of them and its awesome..
Bottom line if you want to upgrade try thinkin on the Broader view.. instead of just going in for the ram!
I think it would be a smarter decision... else think about perfectly cooling the processor so that your Ram upgrade wont be the cause of your processor burning up!

If you can find cheap ram that will fit the k-6, you should notice a significant boost in performance with this upgrade.

However, considering the cost of computers these days, you may want to think about saving up and just buying a new machine.

the memory upgrade will definitely help your computer...550mhz should be enough to do the basics such as websurfing and word or excel editing
