the gameboy games that have saves, which is quite a lot of those games, save on a battery inside of the game cartridge. if you had the right security screw driver/bit (which you can get on ebay for under 3 dollars) will allow you to open the game.

if you know anyone that is able to solder things on cpu chips, you will be able to replace the battery. but remember, age wears on batteries and each time you save, etc. it's a natural thing - these games die.

newer games save on cards, but even on GBA games, many save without internal batteries anymore.

anyway, if you have a hard time finding another battery, you can always get another old gameboy game and use that battery - but remember, it might be a dead battery too - because it's also probably an old game.

It sounds like the game cartridge itself is messed up, not the Gameboy. I'm afraid the only solution is to get a new game! If it's reasonably new still, you may be able to get a refund from the shop you bought it from, but you'll need to check the receipt and store policy.

p.s. Bad things (freedom of speech rocks).
