I'ii try and answer without getting angry at you. Some people who are touchy and sensitive usually have a lot of things on their minds. The American people are probably upset at being blamed for things that are out of their control.

Most of us don't get touchy when a legitimate question is asked. Since I didn't see your original question, I can't really answer that - but it appears from some of the responses you have here, you were insulting. Do you really have to wonder why that pisses people off?

Sorry, I don't know what you're talking about. How about a few examples ? I'm very much an American. I've been asked a whole lot of questions. So far, after all those years, I've never been touchy when asked anything.

where to start? i guess with the fact that i am an american, good, bad or indifferent. and i will be the first to admit there are a lot of people around that make all americans look worse than a bit thick. i think the reason they get so touchy is that for about the last forty years, people have been taught that their feelings should never be hurt, and that they should be treated with nothing less than total acceptance and respect. regardless of how they act. aside from making them all hyper-sensitive to any criticism, it also explains how they got to be {sorry, but there's no other way to say it} dumb in the first place. schools that won't fail a kid because it'd upset him, teachers who don't use grades, so that some students aren't put in a position of being "above" other kids. participation ribbons for everybody, not first-place ribbons for the winners. winning means someone else lost, and that's not good for the loser. not just schools but everywhere. ask out someone at work and worry about getting slapped with a sexual harrassment suit. spank your kid? child abuser! mention that people come in different colours {yes, colours! not colors. some of us spell right!}, and get labelled racist. it is constant and ridiculous and scary and sad. and it isn't only those of you from other countries that it gets to. our society is going through a very nasty phase right now, and it will get worse before it gets better, i'm afraid. as a relatively young nation, we are still growing and figuring out what works--and what doesn't. in the mean time, you will continue to get ugly responses to anything involving discussion of any sort of group of people.

by the way, i hate to burst the bubble of the gentleman who accused you of racism, but "american" is a nationality, not a race. that said, i will stop, as i have nearly written a book here. : )

Because your last question was extremely prejudiced.

No one likes a prejudiced person as it reveals ignorance and stupidity.

You have seperated Americans from other people with your question and the truth is there is no seperation, it is just an illusion / names, countries - all man made illusions. People know this truth deep down so they get angry.

From a British man.

Because you act like an @$$hole when you ask the question. Did you ever think that everyone gets touchy when you start generalizing about their nation? I don't hate you because you asked a question about my country, I hate you because you're a pompous jerk.

Well, surely, by questionning their "thickness" there could be a little bit of a misunderstanding. They may believe you are questionning size or weight, which is insulting in itself. However, any Americans that know that you're really questionning their intelligence would obviously be insulted also.
So that is why they get touchy: you're clearly insulting them you prat!

Because Americans are cowards that without guns or big numbers are nothing more than flushing hot air.

And sharon, you wish!

probably because your question isn't really fair. they don't seem any more thick than most brits or aussies for example. we can't really tell how thick other nations of the world are because we don't share a common first language but the ability of many people from almost every other nation in the world to speak english better than the brits, yanks or aussies do probably signals they are a better educated lot than us from the english speaking world.

Maybe you didn't go about asking your previous question in the right way. I understand where you are coming from though. I'm not sure that the Americans believe that a world exists outside of their own country. In general the education system is poor and their insufferable arrogance takes over.

In response to Debbie. You say "its our right, its called freedom." That sort of comment is exactly what Richard M is talking about. You, as a nation are so naive. You're not free at all, you are free to do as your government tells you.
