Because it origianally came from rugby football. Yes we changed the rules but kept the name the same.
Both American football and soccer have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, and American football is directly descended from rugby football.

The word "football", when used in reference to a specific game can mean any one of those described above. Because of this, much friendly controversy has occurred over the term football, primarily because it is used in different ways in different parts of the English-speaking world. Most often, the word "football" is used to refer to the code of football that is considered dominant within a particular region.

In most English-speaking countries, the word "football" usually refers to Association football, also known as "soccer" (the name was originally a slang abbreviation of Association). Of the 45 national FIFA affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, only three (Canada, Samoa and the United States) use "soccer" in their name, while the rest use football (although the Samoan Federation actually uses both). However, in some countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, use of the word "football" by soccer bodies is a recent change (or a reversion to a long-abandoned name) and has been controversial.

My heavens, I never have been flashed, but I did unintentionally flash a few folks once. I was in the hospital some time back and decided to take a stoll to the vending area. Well, I wasn't thinking about what I was wearing and, let's just say that those hospital gowns don't leave a lot to the imagination on the backside. The nurse came up from behind me and put a blanket over my shoulders . . . I was wondering why it was a little drafty back there!

We take our Football very seriously. Just like you take your Football seriously.

Rugby Sucks! Soccer Sucks!

Football (the REAL football) is the best sport in the world. You can keep telling yourselves that soccer is so great but it's still freaking boring as all hell to watch.

So that way, a "football" game can actually score points and be exciting. That is why American football fans don't get bored with a 0-0 game and start a riot.

You use your feet to run the entire game and lo and behold! They use their hands....wow.....

Duh!

How many times are you soccer freaks going to ask this question?

For the last time, we are the worlds only superpower. We can call it whatever the hell we want!

If you're not speaking German today, thank an American solider.

The game starts out with the ball being kicked and strategic points are made by kicking the ball.

That's just what I think. LOL

Why do Europeans call that kicking game "Football"? Closer to Soccer, if you ask me.

The very point is that it is indeed an American game (and an extremely popular one at that) and as such we can call it whatever we wish.

The better question would be why in the heck does it matter to you??? Ugh...it's so irritating to see these questions over and over...quit questioning the way Americans do things and only worry about how you all do things for crying out loud!
