i work in an area where i maintain mostly vacation rental homes, and tell my customers to have their tanks pumped every other year.there should not be any obvious signs that it needs it between pumpings.just to explain:the tank itself is a depository for solid waste and area for enzymes to break it down into liquid.liquid waste is distributed out into the drain field and back into the ground.if the tank begins showing signs of requiring frequent pumping it is usually a signal that the drainfield is going bad.regular pumping does prolong the life of your system.when you call to have it pumped be sure to tell them to just put you on their list for when they are in your area,it costs much more if they come to do just one job.

How large is your tank? How many people in your home? We have a lare tank when all of my kids were home (we have 6) we had it pumped every two years the company that we had do the pumping said we prob could have gone another 6 month to a year. We use an enzime product at least once a month (or a packet of yeast -this was recomended by our septic pump people). Now we don't have to have it pumped that often just 3 of us here most the time.

It all depends on what you allow to go down the drain. I lived with a septic system for 13 years in Florida and never had a problem with it and never had it pumped out.

you neeed to know the size of your tank, how many people are using it. always keep the enzyme levels active (there are products for this). and if you have a garbage disposal don't put anything in it that will not rot and watch how much grease and fat you put in it. call the local septic pumping companies and find out when yours was last pumped, there are usually not that many in any town. and a routine pumping every 4 years is not that costly.
