Ft. Lauderdale is pretty safe. There are loads of nice hotels near the beach. Go online to the Ft. Lauderdale Visitor's Bureau. They can send you materials that will help. Also, AAA has a very good tour book of the area.

The prices are higher in December so you may want to reserve early to avoid disappointment.

You can stay on the beach, across from the beach or up to 1 mile away from the beach. Much further than that will get you into the business district. You may also be interested in searching for info on Hollywood Beach which is just south of Ft. Lauderdale and the same distance from the Airport (Ft.Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport).

There is loads to do here and it's lots of fun. Be sure to visit Las Olas and maybe a side trip to Miami (20 miles South)

The Fort Lauderdale Marriott is very very nice and in a good area. Plus, if I remember correctly it's either near or on the ocean. I stayed there a few years ago. And yes, things are within walking distance.

Except for the real cheapo stuff, most of the hotels are either on Ft. Lauderdale Beach or 17th Street (aka 17th St. Causeway). It doesn't have much of a downtown, just a restaurant area along the river & on Las Olas.

I stay in Hallendale Beach - which is almost exactly halfway between Lauderdale and Miami. It's nice, it's clean, and it's not creepy.

I drove from the airport in Lauderdale to the hotel, which was right near Gulfstream park, in about 20 minutes, and we drove to South Beach in about 35 minutes or so.

We stayed in Amer Suites, right off 17, walking distance to all. There is a trolley to beach, nice walk over bridge.
