You could go to the beaches down in Costa Verde (the district of Miraflores) or take a bus to the beaches to the south of Lima. The best ones are El Silencio, Santa Maria, Punta Hermosa, Punta Rocas and Punta Negra (They are about 25 to 30 miles from Lima). If you feel like going a little farther you can try going to Asia (that's an expensive area) which is about 65 miles from Lima.

By the way, regarding Penfold's comment. The beaches in Costa Verde are accesible by car, there are parking lots everywhere and there are stairs and bridges to go through the cliffs and the highway. If you don't feel like walking down there you can always take a cab for not more than 1.5 dollars (not more than 5 soles). The way you get a good price for the ride is as soon as the taxi stops there tell him "5 soles to XXXX", in that way he won't have a chance to give you a higher price. If he doesn't accept just say thank you and wait til the next cab comes.

I don't think there are any good beaches that are accessible. The beaches that you can see from Miraflores seem to be good beaches but they seemed to a nightmare to get to - you couldn't walk it (you had to climb down a sheer face of a mountain then cross a highway) but you may be able to drive there (not quite sure as I don't recall seeing any roads or car parks near the beaches).

In the city and near the city, you will find numerous resorts and beaches on the banks of the Pacific Ocean.

Summer is from December to April, and you have the option to choose between many beaches.

The coast area is characterized to be desertic, existing beaches of extensive plains and others among hills or on the edge of ravines, some of them with sand, and others of stones. The water of the ocean is of green color for the great quantity of plankton. Some of calmed waters and others of big waves that are the delirium of the surfing lovers.
