Will it connect if you are using a wired connection between the laptop and router? That would be my first diagnostic. (This is a basic question, but you do have some sort of modem, right?)

I am curious how you know your card is working.

Then I would check the secuity settings on the router to make sure it isn't blocking your laptop for some reason.

Make sure you have a connection going in to the router. Make sure your settings are correct on the laptop. If all this is correct you may want to contact your Internet service provider to see if it their fault.

You have to set up the wireless connection on your laptop if you have not already. If you have already, you have to actually choose connect to option on start panel and choose wireless network or whatever you named your wireless network when you created a new connection on your laptop for the router. If you want it to auto connect you need to change this in your laptops settings.

If you have a firewall this may be blocking it and need to be modified to allow it.

It, obviously, can't be working fine or you'd be able to access the internet using it. Check, first, using a network cable. You'll then need to check what settings you have.

Try clicking on Start > Run, and type in "ipconfig /release" (without the speech marks). Then, type "ipconfig /renew" (again, without the speech marks).

When you've finished in the Command Prompt, simply type "Exit" to return to Windows.

I hope you get it sorted.
