You can try booking tickets on amritsar howrah mail strats from jalandahr at 19.50 and reaches patna at 21.30 on the second day.I think you can try the same train for return as it runs on everyday.Refer the railway website for details.
As far as hotels are concerned the following hotels are good ones.
Chanakya, Patna
Maurya Patna, Patna
Hotel Pataliputra Ashok, Patna
