you need to install drivers (from Intel, the Mobo manufacturer) so Win can see the various components of your Mobo; go to
http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/D946GZIS/index.htm
click on Tools & SW
under Drv.s & BIOS updtes click on Drv. updates
( http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/is/is_drive.htm )
there are only Win 2K & XP drv.ers, so you'll have to enable compatibility mode (Property of the downloaded file, Comp. panel, choose XP, obviously)
if the driver expands in a directory like C:\Intel\... , change the compatibility for all EXEs there too, if the driver doesn't install right away.

After installing OS, you have to install the chip set matching your motherboard. You should get the chip set CD together with the machine. Without this installation no sound, modem and other H/W related features will not operate.

After this installation you can check in the Device Manager that your H/W is configured correctly and there is no two drivers colliding. If there is any problem, Device Manager will display the driver with a yellow question mark.

If everything above was done correctly, than your sound should be on. SO check the volume or the speaker and the plug of the speaker whether it is hooked up correctly.

Good Luck and enjoy the new machine!
