I own both a PSP and a DS Lite. The graphics on the PSP are definitely better, but I find myself playing the DS a whole lot more. The system and games for the DS are a lot cheaper, so you can buy a lot more with the same amount of money. There are also a lot more good games for the DS compared to the PSP. The PSP also has the annoying loading time like the PS1 and PS2 to play games. The DS uses cartridges and everything loads instantly. Of course, I'd put a lot of value into the systems my friends own. If you like multiplayer and you know a lot of people with PSP and not DS, go with it and vice versa.

PSP let's you play proper games, almost like a playstation or an Xbox combined with a tv except on a small screen... and it does a whole lot more (you can use it to watch movies, listen to music, etc)

Nintendo DS is pretty much just a toy, especially when compared to the PSP... It only let's you play games and these games, compared to the PSP's, are very very basic...

I would advice anyone to only buy a Nintendo DS if they really cannot afford to buy a PSP.
