My wife is in the third trimester and lately she's been waking up in the middle of the night due to bad cramps in her feet and calf muscles. Is this common? Does anyone know why and how to stop it? It must have been really painful and I had to massage it better in the middle of the night.

Thanks

I had this same problem. Buy some banana's and keep them in the house. Have her eat atleast one a day. The potassium really helps. I didnt believe it when my step father suggested but when i tried it it acutally worked.

Congrats on the baby and good luck. Those cramps can bring you to TEARS! ! !

Very Common !
Some people believe that leg cramps during pregnancy are caused by too much phosphorous and not enough calcium in the diet, With approval from your wife's doctor, a change in diet or supplements could be effective.

If your wife gets another cramp she should straiten her leg and flex her ankle and toes slowly towards the direction of her nose (repeat several times), which should lessen the pain. Standing on a cold surface as well as massage (and good on you for being so supportive !!) can also help.

When I was in my third trimester with my daughter, I had that happen a couple of times. My husband was so scared the first time...and so was I for that matter. I woke from a deep sleep with this awful pain in my leg. However, when I was in child birth classes they said to prevent this from happening often, you should stretch your calf muscles (while laying or sitting down) by laying your legs out straight and flattening your feet (so your toes are facing the ceiling). It really helped me. Best of luck to you and your wife.

Massage her legs from the ankle up to the thigh. It is common, particularly at night-time. One possible cause may be a lack of calcium.

My wife also had this and she was able to control hers by her potassium and calcium intake. Basically how many bananas she ate or didn't eat helped her through it and she took a supplement for the calcium. I would continue on the massages bc in the end she will remember how you helped her through it and you will reap HUGE benefits...here is a link to help you with other thoughts and ideas for getting her through this...Good luck...kids are great!

it happens all the time in pregnancy. try a bath before bed. massage her feet and legs with body oils. will hopefully send her to sleep all night and you both have a restful night. try lavender oil. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Help her massage. It is due to bad blood circulation. Pregnancy caused it.
