Well the trouble with this is IT ISN'T TRUE!!! First things first you read it in The Scum - it isn't a proper NEWS-paper it makes up stories that usually stir up bigotry and hatred and pay little o no attention to facts. On Sunday I shall be going with others to the fireworks and bonfire display at Victoria Park - it has been held for years and is excellent and is attended by all religions, races, colours and creeds.
I live in the area. It is not as some of the more misguided answers suggested somehow a form of ghetto but a very thriving and well integrated and on the whole not unhappy London borough The East End has a centuries old tradition of welcoming refugees and newcomers. Those who think the ritish are somehow being subsumed should read a book called Bloody Foreigners which points out quite correctly that the British are not a "pure" race but an amalgam of invading nations - omans, Danish, French, Celts, Picts and so on. Stop panicking about this stupid stories....think of your source and then disbelieve or at best question it. Take the racist and inaccurate hatred elsewhere but stop believing this cr*p. By the way does any one recall that the Fireworks night that everyone celebrates with such abandon is actually a huge great celebration of anti-Catholic hate - Guy Fawkes and his plotters ran a Catholic plot and ever since then one could view this as a piece not unlike the ghastly ritual of the Orange marches seeped in parochil and religious intolerance.

Oh dear Ceaser's wife - you have got it wrong - not just on the notion of a celebration of Parliament not being blown up but the reasons and motivations behind it...who said anythign about how Mr. Fawkes was put to death - one of the worst elements of historical revisionism is to judge standards of yesterday by those of today...but as for indiginous British people - who are these people? The English and to a lesser extent the British are not indiginous - the whole notion of Britishness came into being with the Empire and the Victorians (hmm great values those guys had!) and just remember we didn't even have a king who spoke English as a first language till about Henry III
Also Tower Hamlets happens to have one of the most vibrant and inspiring fireworks display that often use - shock French pyrotechnicians (because they excel at the showmanship). Who gives a damn what the story is - this is not purist heritage but an evolutionary development - good God if we wanted to celebrate the "English" days in historical context better rid ourselves of the Victorian invention as popularised by Charles Dickens - yes that old turkey called Christmas - oops also brought to the UK by the German Prince Albert. Howabout a return to the celebration of such great festivals as All Saints Day - get over yourselves and your religious and racial intolerance

First of all - Guy Fawks Day is not some anti-Catholic festival. It celebrates the fact that Parliament wasn't blown up by a traitor and that the plot was foiled. Yes, it is unfortunate that Guy Fawkes was tortured and hung, drawn and quartered, but that is the justice of the day.
Secondly, many White people have moved out of these areas because they feel overwhelmed by the refugee and immigrants coming in. This is unfortunate.
Thirdly, the indigenous British population are feeling that their traditions and culture are being eroded. And this is a more or less general feeling and it should be counteracted. Simply to build moral. The British should be allowed to fly their Union Jacks and st George flags. Christmas should be called Christmas, one law should apply to all People are becoming more racist because they feel their way of life is threatened. I think the government should take note of how people feel before this whole lot actually blows up.
There's a whole lot wrong in this country and I think it is time for another government. One with a bit more teeth and common sense.
Bengali festivals are all very well, but they shoudn't be a substitute for an English tradition.

Thanks Gilly. As usual the Sun has got the wrong end of the stick. A representative from Tower Hamlets council was on Radio 4 this morning and they said that fireworks would still be on in addition to the retelling of the Bengali legend.

I only wish my local council was doing something as interesting!

for reasons like that is why so many E.N.G.L.I.S.H(.to mr blair if you are reading this;not BRITISH, mr blair and your donkey wife) people are leaving to live in other countries.
Britain has become a sham and yes, has totally lost its identity.
its so full of what USED to be the ethnic minority, and far too many human rights do gooders, that boll+x like that is allowed to happen, and it makes me sick.
if i could get awayw ith it, I'd destroy their little Bengali churches and buildings, grab them all by the neck, point them to the rubble and tel them to f++k off and build it in their own f+++++g country!!

to antony R;
BLOODY WELL SAID MATE, IF I WERE WITH YOU I'D BUY YOU A PINT OR TWO!
GOOD LAD!!!

dear silly gilly,
if what you say is the case, then why are some places trying to ban the school christmas nativity plays, hot cross buns, easter, etc, all to avoid upsetting the other race.some places aren't even allowed to fly the english flag!
what about US!!!!!!!!!
i mean, how long is it untill pork is taken off the menu??

and if bengali is so f+++++g briliant, why aren't these bengali celebraters back in bengali celebrating it???

jude, two words, f++k off, or to put it more politley, GET REAL!!!

I think that we are losing our identity, we are increasingly seeing stories where some form of 'celebration' of British identity is being banned, or there are attempts to repress it in case it causes offence to people from other cultures. It's ridiculous, if you can't show pride in your country when your actually here, where can you. In Britain today, it seems that you can be any other culture apart from British. I believe that ALL cultures should be given respect - including the British culture.

what????? it just gets better and better doesn't it? as a kid i loved nothing more than going to a bonfire watching the fireworks and waving sparklers! infact i still do (roll on sunday) i think that kids should be aware of other cultures but to competely erase tradition and take on another countries heritage for the evening (on bonfire night no less) is just truly ridiculous! its all just crazy!
