A IDE controller card costs about £10 from microdirect. Maybe you can find a cheap deal.
But first make sure.
Your mobo must have two IDE connecters.
1 can be used to connect two drives (Master and Salve)
You can connect 2 CD drives at one slot in Master slave form. If you are not sure which one to keep master just put on cable select jumper. The jumper is beside the hard disk where the IDE cable is connected.
secodn you can connect two Hard disks with other avaialable connector on borad. But you will still need a controller card to connect extra 2 hard disks.
The best option is to get a a card and only attach your boot drive to your board and let all the other drives run on the controller. Most of the controller cards have more than 2 slots so definelty you will be able to add all the drives in a tenner solution.

well are you using a mother board that has 3 places for ide cables? because if so set them up on a slave master system. if not than you would need a controller card (raid card will also work) maxtor makes many. also some larger hard drives sometimes will come with a controller card for free in the box so that might be worth a look if you are purchasing the drives new.

Why on earth would you want 4 disc drives?????
You stated that these are seperate from your hard drives .... I would think the availability of the 4 x 51/2 bays would be for CD-DVD Burner maybe a Zip drive ... maybe for front loading USB and Audio and perhaps a 3rd party Temperature sensor ... NOT 4 CD Roms

You can go to a computer/electronic store and find a PCI card that allows you to connect more disk drives and or hard drives. I found a few different models at Fry's Electronics. If you cannot find them there search Ebay they might have some listed.

External hard disk is available in stores. Just make sure you have a USB 2.0 so that you won't be frustrated about the speed
