If you think you should apologise, then apologise, even if you say something general like sorry for the misunderstanding. If you feel more remorseful than that, then go all the way and say you were wrong etc etc.
If you think your friend will talk to you, then tell them in person, if not, send them a note/card/email etc.
Also say you miss the friendship and ask for forgiveness and let bygones by bygones and can we be friends again.

apologize to him, whomever is making mistakes, but Love is forgiving and forgotten....
be humble to ur friend, once he forgives u, he'll surely forgive u too....
if it turns backward then just be his 'friend' from far.
