He talks to me when other people are around (such as other friends and members of family), but if we're ever left alone, he just goes quiet and either responds to things with a nod or a mumble.

He talks to me a lot when other people are around (such as other friends and members of family), but if we're ever left alone, he just goes quiet and either responds to things with a nod or a mumble. He's not usually shy, and if other people are around we can hold a conversation for hours, but if we're alone, bam, he goes quiet.

(he does have a girlfriend, although she's a pretty recent acquisition, I've only seen him when he hasn't had a girlfriend.)

I was once on a sales training course that discussed getting customers to talk to you and they used something called 'a hot spot' like the old Barrymore tv show.

Everyone has things in life they are enthusiastic about and when you hit these 'Hot Spots' they suddenly open up to you, they relax and the conversation flows about something they have a passion for and are confident to talk about.

It could be their hobbies be it Football, F1, Knitting, Hangliding, what ever but hit a few of these HOT SPOTS every now and again will get the conversation moving.

You know this guy, what he does, where he goes, so your well ahead already but make sure this doesn't come across as an interrogation with question after question going bang, bang, bang.

Ask any old person about their grandchildren (we were taught this) you will see their face light up and they will talk for hours, in fact you'll wish you never asked.

This is the same technique you can use when chatting someone up, for most women their clother.hair/ shoes are a big thing so compliment them on one and ask a question, and she suddenly opens up.

Give it a try, it takes time to perfect but it really works.

Ok i was going to say maybe he just feels so secure in your company he doesn't feel the need to say anything, but reading your extra comments it sounds like this silence is more shy than companionable. Just speak to him about it, ask him if he's upset with you (it's probably more a case of him fancying you or maybe he feels stupid or boring compared with you but saying you think he's upset with you is more likely to get a reaction from him). Make the most of the day you spend alone, this intensive time together could be good for you both.

make Him laugh. You better think of something or it`ll get really uncomfortable.Perhaps Your friend clams up coz He' likes 'You.If it`s mutual and You 'like' Him also, turn the lights down and do a strip- tease. He could run though.Better try leaning over Him to get something.See if He goes bright red !!! Have fun

Maby he likes you a little more than a friend and dosen't know what to say because he is shy and is unsure about your feelings. Have you tried asking him about this?

Take your Ipod!

Try finding something you have in common. That will give you a starting point. Or ask him an open question - something that he can't just give a one word answer to!
