Can any mums or dads out there give any words of wisdom when it comes to starting their baby on solids please. My son is fast approaching the 6 month mark and I was wondering what has worked for other people? Thanks

Congrats!!!! Starting solids; as messy as it is, is a wonderful time. I enjoyed it along with my son, who LOVED SOLIDS, and weaned himself.... He refused his bottle and started using a sippy cup. Here are a couple of sites, hope they help

Good Luck, and hope your experience will be as pleasant as mine.

My son is 6.5 months old and we started him 1 month ago and it seems to be working well. Here's what we did:
Started with just rice cereal for 2 weeks at dinnertime, but not when he was overly hungry for a bottle. Just started with 1 tablespoon mixed with formula (or water) and gave him what he would take. We gradually worked up to 3-4 tablespoons per night.
We then added in vegetables. You should do vegetables first, because fruits are sweeter and after having them first, the baby might refuse veggies. Use stage one pureed veggies and introduce one every 3-5 days to watch for allergies to any specific one. So far, we've done 4 veggies (with cereal) at dinnertime and will be adding fruits this week.
Gradually, we'll work up to 2 meals per day and then 3. At this point, the main source of nutrition is still breastmilk or formula, so don't worry if he doesn't take a lot of solids at first. It's just a learning experience at the outset.

Good luck!

Start with the baby rice cereal for a little while. Since you are starting him later, you can add in some mushed veggies to his diet as well. Do one ingredient items at a time for 2-3 days and then try something new. Eventually, you can mix and match and in just a few months, you can start finger foods and feed him things you eat (just cut up real tiny)

Tips for Introducing Solid Foods

1. Make the puree or cereal with breast milk, formula, or water. It should be like the consistency of yogurt.

2. Offer your baby breast milk or formula before and after you give baby food.

3. Have plenty of bibs and cloths handy. Baby food can get messy and sticky.

4. Start by giving one solid feed during the day, about 1 tablespoon or 1 food cube. You will gradually increase the portion sizes as baby gets older.

5. Let your baby touch her food.

6. Don't give your baby honey or foods containing honey the first year (due to botulism).

7. Stop feeding your baby as soon as she lets you know she is done.

8. Let your baby eat as much as she wants.

Personaly I dont believe in all this waiting until a baby is 6 months old until they get food. Thats probably why so many kids are sickly these days. I started feeding my first son rice baby cereal at one month . all you do is mix the cereal with the baby formula until it is spoonable and use the little baby spoons that fit thier mouths. At two months I started him on the gerber vegetables introducing one every 5 days since you dont want to try two new things at the same time in case they are allergic to something you will know exactly what it is . At three months i started him on the fruits. and at four the pure baby meats. I never gave them those dinner ones or the chicken and noodle type ones since they contain so much flour and other stuff and not so much of the good stuff. I had him off of formula by 4 months and on 2 % milk . My son has never been sick and stands 6'2 and I am only 5'4" my second son wanted to down 8ozs of formula every 3 hours at one week of age so I started to give him baby cereal at one week with a spoon. Never put food in the bottle. by the time he was 2 weeks old he was finishing off a small plate of cereal twice a day so i started him on some mild veggies and then at 3 weeks so he wouldnt get constipated i started him on a fruits and then not until he was 4 months the meats. He too is huge and never ever been sick. Way back when babies didnt get formula and were given food mashed up from the table right away. What I am trying to say is just start your baby out with the rice cereal and then try out the veggies first and dont forget to wait five days before trying anything new. If you start with fruits first your baby wont want to eat veggies and we all know that veggies are important. Use a small spoon and watch the hands since they love to grab for the spoon and try to do it themselves and it usually ends up in their hair , eyes and nose instead of thier mouths. I still cant get over how a baby can be expected to grow properly with only formula for the first six months. my boys were both off of the bottle at 9 months.and drinking from a cup. each child is different though so you have to play it mostly by ear and if you give your baby beets dont be alarmed when you change the diaper after because they usually will pee a redish color. It scared me the first time because no one had ever told me that would happen so i thought i would let you know just in case you give your baby beets one day. Good luck and hopefully your little one doesnt like making a mess.

You Dr should be able to tell you what foods to start him on first. Mine started first on cereals. Make it very runny at first and gradually increase the consistancy of it. One thing my Dr also said is when you start them on a new food..DO NOT add another new food for 5-7 days. That way if a food does not agree with your child you will know which one it was instead of having to guess what was disagreeable to him.

Best first foods -
bananas
avocados
sweet potatoes

All nutritious and have tastes and textures that babies seem to like. They make for a good transition. Mix it up thin and offer it on a spoon. Sometimes it helps to offer first bites of new things on your finger.
