To prevent to many abbreviations .
Most words can be abbreviated but it wouldn't be worth doing if the writer was constantly forced to explain that the text used was an abbreviation .

Some words do describe themselves, such as "short", "word", "English", they are called homological. Others don't, such as "long", "dictionary", "German", they are called heterological. The question no-one has managed to resolve yet is whether "heterological" is heterological or homological!
