Horrible by choice.
There is nothing evil about the nature of Humanity. There is selfishness, however, and poor choices.
To change the Universe, change yourself.

I don't think humans are basically horrible, or anything else. We do horrible things, because we don't know any better, and often because we are mentally injured, or ignorant, and avoid thinking because it confronts the ideas with which we've grown. And curiously, in the midst of those horrible things, we see the best and worst of what we're capable of, yet so frequently fail to learn - just as the Israelis who, having suffered in Europe, inflicted the price of their suffering on the Palestinians and avoid confronting their own part in the results.

The human mind is not a very pleasant thing (which we all must learn), but as we are lead by the divine, we cease to be horrible (horrible is the default setting for the human consciousness).

In what way horrible? Like having the capacity of hurting each other? As human beings we have the capacity of being horrible monsters and destroy our lives and other's. But we also have the possibility of love and making life beautiful or at least livable.

Humans have the capacity for both good and bad. I don't know what sparked your question, but we each have the ability to impact the world in either a positive or negative manner. I choose positive.
