Well, there are a coupole of candidates; here are some players that many people rave about:
Zinedine Zidane, Franz Beckenbaur--Zidane has been voted best player from Europe, of all time, Beckenbaur came second.
There are others: George Best, Platini, and well, that's all I can think of now.
Pele called Best the best player in the world once.

There are some potential candidates for the title: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo...

And well, there are some who could even take over the mantle of being the best ever: Lionel Messi, Robinho who really is starting to live up to the hype and Francesc Fabregas. Maybe also Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney and even Freddy Adu who has been recieving lots of hype.

Oh well. Personally I say Zidane, for now anyway.

Johan Cruyff

Why am I not surprised to see English people not acknowledging Maradona's skill, sad really, letting something that happened 20 years ago cloud your judgement.

Maradona is indeed first, followed by Pele. Third I would think is Zidane, or if he was more consistent Ronaldinho.
