Technology gets better and better all the time. In 20 years, there could be more advanced computers and maybe a new source of fuel for cars. It is hard to say what will happen in 20 years.

Everyday, things in the world of technology just get better. But there is this probability that things will stop on developing, progress will come to a halt, and yes, in the next 20 years. When has the last revolutionary invention hit the world? Yes, everyday, great inventions are being made. But do they parallel to the invention of the plane? of the computer? of the diesel enggine? of the light bulb?
But then again, something's might just be waiting in the next corner...
At best, if there will be grand technological advances in the next 20-50 years, they will be grandly unexpected.
But if we are to be allowed to be too optimistic, I believe the most exciting frontier is in biotechnology such as; the perfection of cloning technology; the cure for AIDS, cancer and other deadly diseases; longevity of up to perhaps 150 years for humans; better and more food for many, if not everyone; improvment in nurtition and diet; and stuff like that.
Outside biotechnology, we'll be waiting for high-temperature superconductors, nanorobots, the giving way of electronics to photonics, smaller and faster computer, wetware, the best detergent and soaps yet, woundless surgery, artificial intelligence, a true science of psychology, better biodiesel and other alternative energy sources, and a lot more. Hope we survive up to that time.

Computer advances will not help cars. Cars and computers are completely different things. A $1,000 computer today is 1,000 times more powerful than a million dollar computer in 1970, but a $20,000 car today is not really better than a $3,000 car from 1970. The same applies to airplanes and rockets. This is why we have not gone back to the Moon.

Toilet paper hasn't changed in 75 years or so. I think we're due for an upgrade.
