The Terminator story goes like this:
Sometime in the future, the robots/machines become self aware. Meaning they gain an understanding about their surroundings and realize that they don't have to follow man/humanity's commands. They rebel. When they rebel, man sets out to destroy them and they fight back. (Matrix uses similar premise.)
In the future, the machines have nearly destroyed mankind - but wait, one human finds a way to beat the machines. The tide starts to turn and the machines realize that they will be beat and turned into slaves or killed unless they do something desperate.
They decide to send a Terminator machine into the past to kill the one human who will be the cause of their future destruction - John Connors. (make sense so far?)
The Terminator is sent to the past to kill the mother of John Connors before he is born. John Connors - the leader of the human rebellion - sends one of his men into the past to kill the Terminator. Then they destroy the time machine. Since the Terminator doesn't know which Connors is the mother, he kills all women named Connors. Since John told his man (Reese) his mom's name, Reese is able to save Sarah Connors from the Terminator. Reese and Sarah fall in love and Sarah becomes pregnant with John.
Terminator 2 - In the future, the machines get the time machine fixed and they send in a new Terminator model to kill the young John Connors. The future John Connors learns this and sends a reprogrammed old Terminator to go into the past to protect his younger self. The new Terminator tries to kill John, while his mom Sarah tries to figure out exactly when the machines became self-aware and started the war against humanity. The old Terminator tries to save John Connors. Sarah tries to save the world.
T3 - John Connors is older now. And somehow, the war in the future is not over and the time machines are still working. And the machines send an even more elaborate machine to go into the past and kill JC (no, his initials aren't JC by accident). Why they don't choose to go to the 1980s to kill his mom, I don't know. Anyway, of course the future JC was able to get an upgraded Terminator back to the same time to help save John. John realizes that the Skynet system that becomes the machine warriors has not yet been destroyed and he tries to destroy it. But he only succeeds in saving himself as the war begins.
hope this helps.

In the future, computers have taken over the world. A computer system called Skynet, an artificial intelligence computer, became self aware and began attacking humans (Judgement Day). The humans were almost wiped out, but John Connor led a group of human resistence fighters and began fighting back.
In the first Terminator, John Connor sends Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor (John's mother) from a cyborg (Arnie). Reese and Sarah bond and have a evening of passion. The next day, of course, as they are escaping from Arnie, Reese gets killed and Sarah winds up killing the cyborg. At the crime scene, we see the Terminator crushed, but several people are walking away with parts of it, so study the technology. At the end we find that Sarah is pregnant (with John).
In T2, the cyborgs in the future send back a newer Terminator that can morph into objects and people that it touches. The new T-1000 goes after John (as a teenager) and Sarah, who is now in an insane asylum. Arnie comes back as the older model Terminator that was send back in time by the future John. John and Arnie meet up and Arnie protects John from the T-1000. While they escape, John commands Arnie to rescue Sarah from the insane asylum.
When the free Sarah, the find that a man named Miles Dyson was responsible for creating Skynet. The decide to kill him and destroy his data so Skynet is never built.
Sarah goes on to kill Dyson, but John and Arnie stop her and convince Dyson to destroy his data. The four sneaks into his workplace, but burglar alarms go off, notifying the police (and the T-1000 who is posing as a policeman).
As the police try to stop the four, Dyson gets shot. Bombs are set up, but John takes a microchip and the arm from the original Terminator that attacked Sarah and Reese from part 1.
With his dying breathe, Dyson blows up the office building with the rest of his data and Sarah, John, and Arnie escape, with the T-1000 in pursuit.
The chase ends in a factory when the T-1000 is pushed in a vat of what looks like molten lava, but it's some kind of factory. John throws the arm and the microchip in as well. However, Arnie says he must be destroyed. Arnie also goes into the molten lava.
Feeling good about themselves, Sarah and John think they stopped judegement day since all of skynet's data was postphoned.
Part three starts with John, now as an adult, and Sarah has died. He lives off the grid, traceling from place to place. He gets into an accident on his motorcycle and breaks into an animal hospital to mend himself. While there, Kate Brewster, a vet, is called into the hospital because a customer's cat got sick. While there, a new Terminator, the T-X, attacks. This new cyborg can still morph, but can control other machines. The cyborg, using a cellphone, calls a number and creates a virus that begins crippling the infrastructure of the world.
Arnie comes back again, and helps Kate and John escape. John finds that Judgement really happened. They didn't stop judegement day, just postphoned it. Then they find that Kate's father is now head of the Skynet project.
Meanwhile, Kate's father is being pressured by congress to use Skynet to kill the computer virus. He finally gives in.
While all of this is occurring,The TX is going around killing all of John's future leiutentants.
John decides to help Kate's father and see if he can stop Skynet before it becomes fully aware. Arnie says they can't go rescue Kate's father because his mission is to take John and Kate to safety.
Kate asks Arnie to rescue her father, and Arnie asys ok. John asks why Arnie will obey Kate's orders, but not his. Arnie says it was because Kate (who turns out to be John's wife in the future) reprogammed him because John was killed.
The three get to skynet, but it's too late. It has become self aware and uses other robots to attack humans. The TX attacks Arnie while John and Kate escape. The TX reprograms Arnie to kill John. Arnie finds John, and shuts himself down to keep from killing John.
John and Kate fly to a base that holds the mainframe of skynet, hoping to shut it down. They were given directions and access codes by Kate's father, who died. When they get to the base, they find it's an abandonned nuclear fall out shelter.
The TX arrives and attacks John and Kate. Then, Arnie arrives and sacrafices himself to kill the TX.
John and Kate are in the fallout shelter and hear on an old radio that nuclear missiles are firing. Judegement day stills happens.
