In College the students should be there to learn, not to socialize and make friends. Perhaps you should just stick to your course and not worry about breaking the ice. If you want to be taken seriously as a professor you should stick to the lesson plans.

One of the best I've heard is from an English Aircraft maintenane engineer instructor, " greetings students, my job is to teach you about xxxxxx and I would appreciate it if I finished first". Cracked up the whole class I was in.

Give a sad story to them. So that they will realize what are the main purpose they come to college. You also can tell the successful person story like Bill Gates, so they will interested to start their learning

yes ask every one to interview their neighbour ,give them an hour or half an hour ,then tell everybody to introduce and present the person they have interviewed to the class.
and they can make it as rosy as they like ,

it is fun and everybody gets to know who everybody is and what their likes ,interests and capabilities are
and it is far easier to be grand or spectacular about other people than yourself

open an unusual topic different from the course that you are teaching.. example: tackle your classes' favorite genre of music..

make a slideshow presentation about yourself. tell where you are from, where you were born, where you graduated from high school, college, ect....
