Since I was a little child I have had a habit of wiggling my toes in a special pattern. Whenever I sit still, I wiggle them first up, then curl them down and wiggle them up again, and I repeat this movement every 10 seconds or so. Totally unconscious. No I found out that my sister and my father do EXACTLY THE SAME. Same movement, same pattern. And, that's not all: this weekend we visited my cousin (daughter of my fathers big brother). She was barefoot, and I realized, that she wiggles her toes the same way. I think this is totally crazy. So: what do you think: can those body habits or tics can be genetic or hereditary?

My dad and i twist our hair (same area of our heads) when we are tired and i have recently noticed that my 2 daughters do it too. My partner, his mum, brothers(2) and sister all bounce their legs on the floor when sitting down. I have no idea if it's hereditary or whether we pick it up from seeing it in our parents/family but it is very common to have similar "ticks".

Definitely! I have an uncle that walks on his toes, and so does his daughter. We pick up lots of traits from our parents. Sometimes hand gestures, sometimes certain foods we like or dislike can be the same.

it's more likely to be emulation or imitation. perhaps when you were younger you saw your father do the same thing over a period of time, you tried it out & it stuck. perhaps he even picked it up from your uncle.

as far as i know habitual actions aren't encoded in our genes, but maybe they make us more susceptible to certain habits, eg. the 'obesity' gene which supposedly makes one more susceptible to over-eating. i guess this segues into nature vs. nurture.

Most of our body habits are not genetic .they are acquired. Therefore according to me your habbit is not genetic but due to the regular practising if someone has stopped your habit in your child hood then you may not face this problem in this stage.
