I wholeheartedly recommend the violin - it's not too hard to learn, and can be great when alone.

If you like to sing as well, the violin gets in the way - in that case a classical guitar is a great starter instrument and is a good lead to other instruments later on if you're that way inclined. Good for having fun with mates.

If you want cheap and quick to learn, then a uke.

Did you mean instrument or instrumental?

If its the guitar your playing then "Time of my Life, (Good Riddance)" by Green Day is an excellent acoustic instrumental to learn.

Beatboxing is an artform that is spreading like wildfire. You may not know it, but you will soon easily recognise it. It is a great hobby and you dont need an amplifier, etc. Its totally free.. Check out www.humanbeatbox.com for free tutorials. There are literally kids coming in from the streets doing drugs and they find beatboxing and it saves them... Really , think about it!! Its sooo cool too:D

How about the penny or tin whistle? Cheap to buy, relatively easy to learn, and sounds great when played properly.

It would definitely be the guitar.
It's quite easy to learn but quite hard to master.
Well anyway playing music is that you must enjoy doing it .....doesn't matter if you are a professional or an amateur.
