I recently took my GMAT test and I had to send my scores to MBA programs -- problem is I don't know beans about them. Can you tell me which MBAs are for what? I'd like to move up some corporate ladder someday and do good things.

Frankly the same thing could be said about any undergraduate or masters program -- not like these degrees are unique in any way --

Generally, there are two types of MBAs, the executive MBA and the traditional MBA. Under the traditional MBA, there are two subsets, these are the 2 year and the fast-track MBA.

The traditional MBA has specializations which depend on the school you go to. The popular specializations are Finance, Marketing, Strategy, and Operations.

To answer your question, executives who reach the top of the corporate ladder are normally superb managers who pursue the traditional MBA. The degree is used by first specializing in one field, say Finance, then be able to become the CFO. From the CFO level, you can reach the CEO level by becoming a great manager who thinks about big ideas and a holistic approach, not just your specialty.

Try to get into a top business school, and then get a traditional MBA. Be good at your specialty, and everything will follow.

National institute of Business Management (NIBM) offers 1 year Executive MBA along with other MBA programs online. In online mode, the benefit is that you may pursue your studies irrespective of your location. NIBM has earned the accreditation of both IAO and AACBE, hence it is very reputed too.

The important thing with an MBA is not what specialisation you do (unless you want to go into that specialisation - like finance) but which school you go to. So many Universities are offering MBAs these days, and so many people are doing them unless you go to a top school it will not be taken seriously
