You need the ability to engage in positive communication. You also need honesty. If there is honesty a good basis of trust will naturally be fostered between two people. In addition to real unselfish love communication and honesty are the two basic building blocks that make the foundation of a good relationship.
This "holy trinity" of factors will usually afford any relationship, romantic or otherwise, a very good chance of lasting success.
The beautiful part is, that where there is real love, honesty and communication will be more likely to thrive. Where there is good communication and honesty, friendship and love will grow.
In romantic relationships if one or more are missing the chances are that the relationship is not held together by real abiding love, but by infatuation, which will fade over time due to the lack of the proper founding components.

Lady Sephie has given you a brilliant answer and one I would wholeheartedly agree with .... if I had known then (in my previous relationships) what I know now then maybe I would not be single and alone now .... to add to Ladie Sephie I would also include confidence - the confidence to know, sometimes without words, by just a look that that person will be there for you, will not betray you, will support you, will be 'on your side' no matter what - in turn makes you a confident person, you have confidence in yourself, confidence in your relationships, confidence in your abilities .....
The best relationship a person could be in is of the type we have described - but between parents and children ..... so many adults have developed into distortions of what they could have been by parents who, for their own reasons, couldn't be honest and truly loving and trustworthy ..... what a difference this could make ......

Mutual respect. The ability to listen to each other, I mean really listen. Knowing when the other person needs 'alone' time, and letting them have it. Trusting the other person, which, judging by some of the questions asked here, is the hardest one.

Well actually love is the basic element. So if there is love, all the other things are followed like trust, mutual understanding, taking care of one another, devotion, avioding self interest only, openess and so on.

Well, as I have experienced, you need regular and good quality sex life. Intimate moments only for you two, no one else around, no children, share what you like doing together and makes you two feel happy. Good luck

Trust. If you love someone and you can't seem to put your trust in that person than you're not in love with that person. You're in lust. You're only attracted to the physical attributes that the person has. Without trust there can't be love. Its really simple.
