No idea how it has happened but when I type shift 2 I get @ and when I type shift ' I get "...also, shift 3 gives me # instead of a pound sign?! Any ideas on how to fix this? My keyboard is on UK settings.

you can find @ sign: shift key, then press number 2. your setting is different. here's how to change it:

go to start button, click control panel, then click on date, time, language and regional options, select regional option. then highlight English (United Kingdom), then apply, then OK.

Your keyboard is not on UK settings if you're getting that.

Under Windows, go Start -> Control Panel. Then go to regional and language options, and set everything on every tab to English (UK).

goto control panel/ keyboard/and set to english uk/

then remove english us

Still sounds like your keyboard is on american settings double check it.
