1) No other Halloween-related prop is never used in any other occasions. Black cats are just black cats. You can have one at home as a pet or as a toy. No other time of the year would you have a carved pumkin.
2) Jack-o-lantern is supposed to protect your house from ghosts, so everyone whould get it. It is probably the oldest and most original Halloween thing.

It wasn't always. Jack-o-Lanterns have their origins in Irish folklore in the story of Stingy Jack who was denied entry to Heaven and Hell, forced to wander the darkness with a hollowed turnip as his only light.
When Irish immigrants came to America, they brought their traditions with them. Pumpkins, a fall vegetable, were much easier to carve than turnips, and so became the symbol for the fall holiday now known as Halloween.

I've never really thought about that before to be honest. For Christmas, I have seen in different magazines how people will carve watermelons the same as pumpkins. Of course they carve unique designs instead of scary ones.

Jack - O - Lanterns were supposed to house the spirit of the devil, and its a long story about how the devil was tricked to go inside one, and so it supposedly protects your house.
