It depends on what kind of files you are going ot store on you computer. I have two internal 250 Gb Hard drives, one 200GB External hard drive, and 1024 MB of Ram. I have both the internals partitioned into 40 -60Gb partitions. 60 GB partitions I use for movies I have dlownloaded form my Tivo or from my DVD collection, Some other partitions are for Downloaded Programs, Family Pictures, Family Movies from Digital Videos, and so on. The External hard drive is full (about 170Gb) of MP3 music. So the more Hard drive space you have the better. As far as memory goes 512Mb should be a minimum if you are running Windows XP, I would run at least 1024Mb so you have some room to grow. In the future (very near future I would bet) you will be needing a minimum of 1024Mb of Ram and better performance out of 2 Gb of Ram. So plan ahead. Hope this helps..

I have a friend that took 3 years to fill a 40GB hard drive. I also have a friend that took 2 years to fill 2 1000GB drives, 1 120GB drive, and 2 80GB drives. It depends on you. In the end, average price for hard disk space is under 50 cents per GB of storage. If you are comfortable upgrading later, go little and cheap until you get an idea how much you want. If you want no hassles, go as big as you can find, and then you have no worries.

A hard drive really depends on what you're going to put on it. If you are going to put a lot of music, movies, etc on it, get as much storage as you can.
For memory, I typically go for the middle configuration option. I figure that's usually plenty for my immediate needs, and it's cheaper to buy more and add it later than what they want for the memory upgrade when you buy the computer.
If you aren't the type of person to add memory yourself, though, then you pretty much can't get too much when you buy your computer. That's going to make the biggest difference in performance. I see what Dell's recommending now is 2 GB for the upcoming Windows Vista.

you need to specify more details about your hardware, so that we can help you.
it all depends on your computer hardware, what application you want to use, (ie, graphical, auto cad, games )
normally 512 MB ram is enough for home users. but i prefer 1 GB with 80 to 100 GB hard drive.
but hardware should support the size of ram and hard drive.
one more thing, there are few types of ram.
1) SD
2) DDR
in DDR also there is DDR1 and DDR2. it comes with bus speed ( ie. PC 130,300,400)
if you can provide more information about your hardware i can help you better.
please let me know if you have any further questions.

Good for what?
If you can afford it, get 1GB of RAM or more.
You want at least 100GB hard drive and you might as well get the biggest you can afford. No one every complains about too much storage space.

1 GB of RAM module
120 GB of Harddisk preferably the SATA version 7200RPM.
If you are upgrading, be sure that the items you are buying are compatible with your computer.
