say a smoker tells you that smoking is bad. why is it our first thought to not believe them because they are contradicting their actions? their advice should be thought of as more valid since they have first-hand experience.

I think it's deep in our (humans') brain-wiring somewhere. A child learns mostly by observation and experiment. "Do as I say, don't do as I do" has never been a very effective parenting strategy. A child assumes (again, I mean in the deep subconscious) that its parents (or other carers) are trustworthy and understand the world it has come into and that it has to learn from them. NAture's safety-survival strategy. If it sees the parents are unhappy doing what they do, it learns differently - to be wary. A young child picks up incongruence more easily and less awarely than an adult (remember the tale of the emperor's new clothes).

because as a society we believe that you lead by example in this case the smoker is not leading by example therefore people won't take him seriously and will disregard what he has to say about the topic of smoking but that's the way people are

because we look at them shoving cigerettes in their mouths and wonder how they do it and then they say 'this is bad'..hence looking at the definition of hypocrite and knowing what it means ie sociology.

SMOKERS AREN'T HYPOCRITES-THERE WANTING TO QUIT BUT THERE VERY ADDICTING THANKS TO OUR 'COVER-UP' INGREDIENT THAT THEY, 'TOBACCO INDUSTRIES', DIDN'T MENTION. IT'S KINDA LIKE A 'CRACK' SMOKER,OR A TEENS HAVING SEX/OR KIDS BEFORE THEY ARE OF AGE. IT'S CALLED CHOICES/MISTAKES EVERYBODY HAS THEM,MAKES THEM AND TAKES THEM. CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK IS JUST THAT.
