It's difficult to keep religion out of politics, since one's religion affects one's opinion on the issues of the day. And, unfortunately, most people don't look at their religion as being, simply, "a religion" like any other. Instead, they view their religion as being "absolutely right" and "the only way to live", etc. That means they're less likely to take a step back and ensure that other people's religions are respected as much as their own is. They think they have the keys to Heaven, and they're willing to force everyone to enter through the door that they're holding open.
That's why we are supposed to have a "wall of separation" between Church and State, in the USA. Unfortunately, for the reasons described above, many religious people would like to see that wall torn down.

No legitimate religon should be given preference over another in the eyes of the government. But this is not the same as removing morality from the government. We seemed really anxious to avoid morality in the government and now we have crooks, perverts, and creeps aplenty. When I was in scouting the criteria was you did not have to be a particular religion but had to have some type of life-affirming belief.

I don't mind religion and politics mixing, to a certain degree. I'm not religious or anything, but I do believe that certain religions have merits, and we should draw on those merits to use in politics, such as how one should behave, no killing, etc. All the good stuff everyone can agree on, but none of that in Jesus' name amen and stuff of the sort like that.

"How necessary was the care of the Creator in making the moral principle so much a part of our constitution as that no errors of reasoning or of speculation might lead us astray from its observance in practice." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Law, 1814. ME 14:139
"[I consider] ethics, as well as religion, as supplements to law in the government of man." --Thomas Jefferson to Augustus B. Woodward, 1824. ME 16:19
"We have no government armed in power capable of contending with
human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our
Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people.
It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other."
John Adams
(1735-1826) Founding Father, 2nd US President

1) Can't keep a persons religious beliefs from informing his political positions.
2) Wouldn't want to even if it were possible.
3) A lot of people will tell you that all wars have been fought for economic reasons.

Well our Fore Fathers knew that religion and politics should never mix, and they were right. That's why they wanted there to be a separation between church and state.

Should know who is the Landlord of God's natural assets and who is the "stranger in strange land" who just came and passing-by on planet earth.
Should know our creator's universal constituition and universal laws vital for our own survival on planet earth.
Should know our creator's universal gifts of life vital for our own survival and advancement on planet earth.
Not in doing things at own whims and fancy in plundering, looting with destruction of God's natural assets in planet of apes.
With the loots and plundering with destruction of God's natural assets glaring under the sun, moon and stars even on cloudy and rainy days can be seen above the sky in planet of apes.
When living human kind is not even the creator of heaven and earth in planet of apes.
How embarassing to call ourselves modern civilization in planet of apes at loss and stranded in planet of apes.

The Bible says, "Thou shalt not kill," "Thou shalt not steal," and "Thou shalt not bear false witness."
Our society has laws against murder and manslaughter, theft, perjury, fraud, libel and slander.
Do you notice the similarity? Do you think the similarity is coincidental?
Don't ask "should" they mix. Ask yourself has there ever been a time when they weren't mixed.
