It truly does depend on what you want to use it for!!

Check your appliances - if they have adaptors, check the adaptor.

Most Japanese portable appliances can take from 100-240v. If your things can take 100v then you just need a simple travel adaptor, which can be bought at many shops (Robert Dyas is a good example!)

If your appliances need the full 240v though, you'll have to buy a more expensive gadget - I'm not sure what the English name is, I bought ours in Japan (which I wouldn't recommend! They're difficult to find here!) This 'power converter' (or whatever it's called) can alter the input - Japanese 100v - to an output of 240v, which will work fine with your appliances! (It's easy to find the converters that reduce 240v to 100v! That's what Japanese people buy when they go on holiday! But the one YOU need is hard to find..!)

If you DO need one, go into a shop that sells a lot of electrical appliances and hardware (like Robert Dyas) and ask for a power converter, which can increase 100v to 240v. If the person you ask doesn't understand, ask to speak to the supervisor or manager!!

BTW, the Japanese plug pins are NOT in this form / \

IIRC, you will need one with two flat pins (like for the US) BUT with the pins at an angle - like this ... \ / . Some adaptors have movable pins.

Also, as advised above, the appliance will need to be capable of working on only 100-110 volts.

It will depend on what you want to convert. Small appliances like hairdryer, mobile, electric shaver will work fine with a normal travel adaptor. If you buy a universal travel adaptor it can be used anywhere in the world.
