Hello

My 1989 Mazda pickup sometimes slow-leaks coolant from a very small (about 1/8 inch) round opening on part of the front of the engine block. This hole is not the result of damage; it seems to be something where a small plug might fit. No threads are visible, so I'm pretty sure a screw or bolt doesn't belong there. I think the opening is located near where the timing belt cover attaches to the front of the engine block.

Does anyone know what this opening is, and what the leak might be resulting from? The radiator, hoses, and water pump all seem to be OK. You can sometimes see the coolant leaking out of this mystery opening; no other visible leaks or problems. The truck runs great, doesn't overheat or produce smoke or any other noticeable problems.

Love the truck, want to keep it on the road and stop or minimize this slow leak. Thanks!...

This I am almost 99% sure, will be your water pump indeed. If the fan is going through the area its most likely the pump. Any shop should check it out for cheap or free. Fixing it will run you around 300-500 dollars.

Never heard of this one. It could simply be a drain hole in case something gets inside the timing cover. There could be a problem with a head gasket that is hidden behind it. You may take your valve covers off and re-torque the front head bolts. If it is not bothering you, this could go on a long time before it causes major problems. You have not said, but it appears you do not have to add coolant often.

The only place that should have a small hole in that area is the water pump and that is to show that the seal of the pump is leaking. If its not that try blocking the hole with silicon .

This is commonly called a weep hole and it is indicating that the seal is gone. You will need to replace the water pump. Have a fun day.
