1. Metal music mostly rougher, speedy, brutal then the rock music. I mean with the tempo or beat of the music.
2. Mostly metal music is sounded have much more "scream" then rock music.
3. Rock music can be easier to listen than metal music.

There is a big difference, specially in the way you perceive the music. Metal is heavier and it pays more attention and detail to the music, and most of the times it is faster too. Yes, there is this lyric difference too, more depressin songs in metal, but you can also find kinda cheerful and lively metal songs. Rock has come to a point where it still talks about things that matter but lately it's mostly about love...The way the singer sings is a difference too. And there are millions other differences that have to do with the kinds, as there are many kinds of metal and many kinds of rock. But generally it just is that rock sounds lighter.

Rock - Can be classified in to diff. categories/group. Such as Grunge rock, pop-rock , alternative rock
Juz think rock is a lighter version of metal, lets juz called it plastic in the mean time
Metal - Which is harder than 'Plastic', again, can be classified into a few categories as well, such as Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, Black metal, juz like the first answerer says, you can sense it once you hear it.

Yeah, this is somewhat hard to explain.
Metal is more heavy and hardcore. Rock is lighter and upbeat.
You can just sense it when you listen.
