I've never been to the Philippines, but I've heard more than once that they are the happiest people on Earth. I wouldn't be suprised that if I went to the Disneyland in California, the only people who would work there would be filipinos (because they are so happy - after all, it's the happiest place on Earth). If I have to explain a pun, just FORGET IT!

Again I'm with Digoseno, but I'll add that I love this place, and the poverty can easily be fixed in the following manner.
1) Allow foreign 100% owned investment in homes and businesses
2) Deposit all unwanted babies at the door of the nearest catholic church until they allow abortion and birth control. If they want people to have all these kids that the people can't afford to feed, then they should take care of them. Pretty soon they'll change their ancient ideas.
3) Accept and learn modern methods of doing things and don't do things the way your fathers did.
4) The most common phrases I hear every day are ' I forgot' and 'I don't know'.
Change that and learn more about your country and the world. What happens in any other country also affects you here.
I love it here, and after 14 years have sort of got used to the laid back attitude.

I am an American and have been to the Philippines about 20 times. I live in Asia (due to my job) and am close enough to travel to Phils whenever I have a few days free from work. I have been to Manila (of course), Cavite, Cebu, Leyte, and Samar. My favorite place was Samar because it is simply beautiful and peaceful.
I have found Filipinos to be kind, caring, and welcoming people. I enjoy making new friends from the Phils and always have a great time when I visit them.
The negative side... Poverty, limited educational opportunities, and pollution are major problems. The government is simply not doing its part to provide a good quality of life for Filipinos. It is difficult for even a college graduate to get a modest paying job. Others are taking advantage of many Filipinos because of poverty. It makes me sick because the Filipinos I know are very loving and caring people who only want to protect and provide for their families.
By the way... if any Filipinos are reading this... Thank you so much for your acceptance of Americans. I truly hope we return your kindness in a way that pleases you as much as your kindness pleases us. God bless you all! Mahal kita!

Foreigners look up at the Philippines a beautiful country, nice people. But they have bad economy because they always argue about politics and religion everyday which are not the concerns of foreigners. Mediamen & TV hosts talk about politics and movie personalities and nothing else. So that ordinary people do not know anything but politics and actors & actresses.

I'm from USA, and think the Philippines is great in General. The nature is beautiful and the people are very nice. Three negative sides are the politics, poverty and the Catholic Church - which are all related to each other. The Catholic Church and its policy regarding birth control is probably the singlemost contributor to the cause of poverty.

I lived in Cebu City for six months back in 2003 and 2004 and I was happy but not too impressed, except by the fact that I love Asian type people and feel more comfortable around them, and the Filipinos seemed to enjoy having me around, despite that I'm 6'4" tall, white, with blond/reddish hair, unlike my Yahoo Avatar, which is a fake. And I love your mangoes, other foods, cheap movie theaters, snorkeling, and more. Of course it's too hot for me, always sweating, don't like crowded jeepneys and buses, could probably implement a better system than jeepneys.
The Philippines is a developing country, so one can't expect the same level of conscientious behavior and competence you'd find in a more stable system. A lot of people are poor, but a lot are working hard and so everyone is getting richer. Many of the poor feel the benefit of the hard working around them and have electricity, phones, televisions and more. A lot of people don't stand up for what's right, take advantage of others, lie, cheat and steal.
The tourist industry is just one area that could be greatly developed, attracting people from all across the world to the tropical paradise of the Philippines.
The best advice I could give the Philippines is to let go of the Catholic church, remove it's rules against abortion, divorce, etc. from your government, creating a system of rule by right of reason, not by mystic doctrines from a world away.
And also from Catholicism comes the twisted morality of begging. Many of the people I met in the PH were nice to me because they wanted me to give them something for nothing, as if I owed them, as if I didn't earn what I have through hard work and virtue. They begged me for gifts, for food, to take them with me. Only because my wife was not a beggar did I come 7000 miles to meet her in person.
The truth is that a beggar is no better than a thief, and at least a thief is honest in his intent. A beggar uses the weapon of twisted guilt to take what isn't rightfully or justly his. But his weapon is useless on me, who has no guilt. The opposite of charity is justice. You can't have both. Until the Filipinos realize that, and many people in the US have trouble with the same thing, they're going to be shooting themselves in the foot, with lazy people demanding what they haven't earned and guilty people who work hard giving it to them, out of fear.
