yes kids getting spanked is bad cause the kid can get a low selfasteem and cause mayhem. the teachers today don't understand that spanking a kid will not change the way he is going to behave it is the kids choice and if he wants to change he will and that's it so if there still kids getting spanked make sure they tell you so you can go to the school and let the teachers know that you can not be spanking my kid okay keebler out peace...

Note: I refrain from expressing my personal judgment about spanking as a disciplinary method, I am only answering your question "Why do some schools still use spanking as a disciplinary method?"

Primary point - Most Western societies have made corporal punishment illegal. In the U.S. it is illegal in roughly half of the states. For some reason, spanking is predominantly practiced in the South.

However, even in states where spanking is legal there are usually regulations that individual schools or school districts must follow.

These regulations usually require the following:
1 - The reasons for which spankings can be used and which personnel may administer them must be documented in advance of punishment.

2 - These 'rules' vary by state and school. The website at the bottom of this page is for WCPR (World Corporal Punishment Research). They have compiled a list of the regulations adopted by individual schools or school districts.

3 - Spankings are almost always only allowed as a last resort to be used after other methods of discipline have been attempted and failed.

4 - Spankings usually must be administered in private to protect the student's privacy. This also ensures that the punishment is 'physical' and not used to humiliate the student. However, when a school official spanks a child there must be a witness present.

5 - Normally, spankings are only allowed to be delivered by a specific school official (usually the principal or vice-principal).

6 - The number of 'swats' allowed is spelled out in the regulations (usually 3). This reduces the chance that an angry individual will continue 'hitting' a student simply to vent their own frustration.

Other reasons why most schools do not use corporal punishment even when allowed by the laws in their state:

1 - School officials can be held legally liable for any injuries caused to the student during spankings. That means they can, and have been sued. Many school officials have lost their jobs due to the issue of spanking.

2 - Spankings is a very, very controversial issue. In some cases it has been considered a form of pedophiliac sexual abuse. Personally, if I were a school official I would not take the risk of being prosecuted as a sex offender. Not only would you lose your job, but you would never be able to come near children again (thus would have to find a new job - not to mention having to register as a sex offender in the national database).

FYI - did you know that many countries have not only made spanking illegal in schools, but also within the home? Similar initiatives in the US have failed repeatedly due to parental rights groups that want to maintain the right to legally spank their children.

Long answer, but I hope this answers your question.

The government didn't ban it, individual states did. In some states the parents can opt-in to have their children spanked for misbehaving. And spanking doesn't harm the child, it teaches them to respect the rules. Thousands of generations of children grew up getting their butts spanked for misbehaving, the last two or three have not --- look at the crime rates and the school shootings that have come about from not disciplining our children and then re-think your position on corporal punishments. I'm for it!

I think schools don't support this act, but its all about the teachers personality. If they have a really abusive background and likes to play god with anyone smaller then them, they tend to use abuse as a form of dicipline.

For them, they feel that this is the only way that a child will learn right from wrong. Any other teaching methods will seem inferior and seem as if the teacher is spoiling the student by just yelling firmly.

If spanking is done right, it is more effective than a swat on the butt. It is a great discipinary tool when the anticipation is most of it....then a light swat. In 3rd grade had tears in my eyes before anything happened. That f**K!!!

you know the previous asserting: Spare the rod and injury the new child. i'm no longer asserting beat babies, yet a sturdy previous spanking would not injury every physique! you're genuine, situations have replaced. I have not have been given any clarification, different than perhaps we could desire to continuously throw a number of this political correctness out the window.

Don't name the school because there would be a stampeed of parents trying to get in line to enroll their kids!! I didn't have to get many spankings as a kid to respect my parents!! I learned at a very young age that I would face consequences for my actions. It has carried through to adulthood! It's unfortunate that we cannot discipline our children anymore...

call the police, the ACLU (american civil liberties union), a lawyer, a friend anyone because this is NOT 1970, and since its not no one has the right to touch you at all ever if you dont want them to. These days, teachers really need to watch themselves. That is sad and disgusting. Please do something about this, that really is awful, illegal, and embarassing.

WRONG!

Before that type of discipline was taken away we never saw a shooting at a school.
