Crime rates are higher in the eastern/southeastern portion of the city so I'd say avoid places like East Riverside. Also the West (UT) Campus area can get chaotic when there are college parties going on.
And Far West is pretty ideal in my opinion: it's in Northwest Austin; the neighborhoods there are all very quiet, and there are lots of greens. In general life is quite convenient if you live there.

Austin's fantastic! Nature is everywhere our park system is great so no worries there.
And sorry but hahahahaha 20 minutes is traffic to you lol. Depending on where you live and work, expect more. I work about 6 miles from where I live it takes me half hour. I have friends that live south side and drive north side, you're talking atleast 40-60 minutes in heavy morning traffice (and again at night)
I live south east side which a lot of people will say is ghetto but i've loved it here and always been completly safe! But my area is a lot of students and mostly apartment complexes. I don't know much about houses unfortunatly.
If you like a unique artsy laid back easy going style, south austin is definatly for you. North austin is all pre-fab, uniform cookie cutter.

If you don't mind traffic then Round Rock isn't bad. The worst traffic is in the North Austin - Round Rock area. There about to open a couple of toll roads, which should help some with the traffic.

you might want to check out Cedar Park, or a little farther out, Lago Vista (a great area, lake, very good schools, etc - worth the travel into the city. We are growing and getting our own large market grocery store! I have lived here over 2 years and it is good) or Georgetown (Georgetown is a little more expensive but a great place to raise a family and great schools - within 15 min of Lake Georgetown). All 3 areas have good highway access to Austin.

Typically North and Northwest of Austin are the areas that meet your needs. Round Rock, Cedar Park, George Town, are all very nice and affordable.
We just sold our 3 bedroom house, which sat on the border of Austin and Round Rock for $140K.

Round Rock, tx, is around 15 miles from Austin, very safe, best school district, easy access to Austin on I-35, plenty of good residential areas... it's been voted among N.America's top 10 safest and most livable towns.

My brother, who's homosexual, did plenty of study earlier than finding out to transport from just about our house in New Jersey, and after spending plenty of time on-line and within the library, adding poring over the today's replica of "Places Rated," selected Austin as his new house. It had plenty to present, adding being homosexual-pleasant, having many task possibilities in his subject (this used to be a couple of years in the past), well cultural possibilities, and it used to be a long way from Mom, who, bless her center, used to be smothering her youngest son. He acquired there and cherished it directly. However...the tremendous head stopped considering while the little head began, as is probably the case, and he grew to become round and drove again to Nashville, which he had handed by way of en path to Austin. Turns out he had "met any one" at the same time spending the ones few days in Nashville and determined that used to be larger than the unknown in Austin. He has been in Nashville ever considering that, however fortunately, continues to be with the identical man, who's an overly candy hairdresser and thinks the sector of my bro. So...Austin, Austin, possibly a satisfactory alternative for you. Best of success to you amigo.

Anywhere west of MoPac is nice, i.e. Westlake (lots of snobs though)...just avoid East Austin, it's the bad part. Hyde Park is also a really nice, peaceful neighborhood in an awesome location. Or downtown if you want to be in the middle of the action.
