I own a home in Minnesota but have recently gotten engaged. How do I go about adding my wife's name to the title of my house?

ADD DETAILS - I want to add her right now because she is already living here, but our wedding is not scheduled for another year and I want to make sure she wouldn't be homeless if something were to happen to me.

First, wait until you're married to do this, not while you're still engaged.
Go to the Land Titles Office, here it's located in our local Courthouse, and tell them what you want to do. Fill out a bit of paperwork, pay a bit of money, $75.00 I think it is and you have to have both of your signatures witnessed by a Notary, but that's pretty much it.

Hi,

You can sign a quit claim deed as the grantor and add your wife's name to the title. Let an attorney prepare the deed as this is a legal matter. The deed after being signed should be attested by a notary public and then filed for recording at the County Recorder's office or the Office of the Register of Deeds.

Go to the courthouse that has jurisdiction over the property and ask for a joint tenancy deed with right of survivorship. Fill it out and file it right there. Also, you will need the legal description of the home. I do not know why you would want to put her on the deed, though. It seems pointless as she may have an interest in the property when you get married regardless of what the deed says. I would hold off on that until you want to do a financial transaction with her included, such as a refinance.

Go to a local title company and file a "quit claim deed". It should only be about $10 to add her on. They will handle the whole thing, it's not too complicated.

Contact the Clerk at the County Courthouse where your title is registered. I recommend that you wait until after the ceremony to have your fiance's name added to the title.

I would not do it until you were married. If you do and something happens to the relationship, she owns half the house.
