In a very ancient holy scripture called "Bhagavata Purana" the real happiness is described as follows: "brahma saukhyam tv anantam".
"Saukhyam" comes from the Sanskrit word "sukha" which translates into "happiness". "Brahma" means "spiritual", and "anantam" means "unlimited".
So, real happiness is possible on the spiritual platform. It is unlimited and it is always increasing.

Happiness should not be confused with joy. Joy means a pleasantly agitated mind. It is an emotion. Happiness is no emotion. It is a state of mind that is at peace with itself - neither agitated in joy nor submerged in sorrow. Happiness in absolute terms is unattainable as such. However, we can maximize the degree of happiness by continuously striving to reach a balanced mind - balance of mind comes from a sense of contentment and acceptance of things as they are. What helps most in achieving this is to remind ourselves all the time as to how 'small' we are in this vast and varied universe.

Happiness is fleeting. Much better to be content, which is to be at peace with yourself and the world around you. It's not a giddy kind of happy, but if you can find it - if I can find it - I think it would last longer.

Doing things I enjoyed as a kid like playing in the sprinklers on a hot day. Nostalgic things.
