Under 98 & ME boot into safe mode (press F8 while booting to get there) and run scandisk from there. That way no background processes interfere. If it is 2000/XP going into My Comptuer, right click C:, Tools, Error Checking, check both boxes, say "Yes" to schedule for the next time you reboot, and reboot and walk away. If Scandisk continually freezes still I would consider replacing your drive before you lose everything.

Since you know what to do and don't want to do it (I did it for $100.00) the only thing I can tell you is what I have been saying like a broken record. Do a thorough clean up of your system! Clean your cache, delete Internet files, cookies, and history, including a check disk and a defrag. restart your computer and try again to see what happens. If the problem persists, go to Tuneup Utilities site and download their free trial program and have clean your registry automatically. If this doesn't work, your only solution would be to do what I did with the very same problem you have. Upgrade to windows XP home.

ME is a pain; you know where! And there is no more support from Microsoft for ME.

Good luck
