hard to believe the manufacture under estimated demand, was this done on purpose to sell other, underperforming toys?

TO EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE AN ELMO YET:

Some stores are doing Pre-Sales. Basically you can pay for your Elmo and they guarantee it will arrive by Christmas at their regular price of 39.99. They did it here (Puerto Rico) and the shipment arrived on Wednesday. I know because my cousin ordered one and I'm taking her on Sunday to get it from KB Toys. So before shelling out $150+ check with your local toy stores to see if they have any other shipments coming in. Good luck to everyone!

P.S.-Fisher Price.com did say they'll have it on 2007.

If you don't want to spend your whole life calling all the stores or fighting the crowds you best bet is ebay. I've heard of people having guns pulled on them in stores for elmos and people getting assulted (search google to find the articles) so ebay is safer too!

http://www.findtmx.com has some good tips on getting it on ebay at the lowest price. They average $84 on ebay but can sell for as much as $100 or as little as $45. I'm sure ebay prices will be going up as the holidays aproach so check out the guide now!

I believe manufacturers sometimes purposely do that to increase the hype for a certain toy. Remember the Cabbage Patch doll craze several years ago? They were being touted as the hottest toy for Christmas at the time they came out, yet people were having difficulty finding them, and then paying ridiculous amount of money for the ones they could find. It's just a marketing ploy.

Yes. In stores and possibly in eBay as well.
