Ok, so I'm currently in a long distance relationship with this girl for over 6 months now and she has this pretty serious medical problem with her lungs, and hence she needs to keep her stress level down. Otherwise there is a chance that her lungs may fail and thus result in death. I tired breaking up with her recently and she said that if I break up with her and if the elevated stress becomes the cause of her death, I would be liable for it. So basically I am being forced into a relationship that I do not wish to be in. What should I do? And would I really be held liable in the worst case?

Oh, and I have not seen her yet. But her point is that I am "aware" of her condition and what may happen in the given situation. That's why I would be held liable according to her.

If the relationship is not the immediate cause of death, there is no liability.

It's interesting-- the way you describe this relationship makes me wonder if the whole time has been long distance. Have you ever met her? If so, did she have lung problems then?
I just have to ask what kind of person has a serious medical problem and depends on a long-distance relationship to keep her alive.
While she may feel you would be ethically liable for her death (if it shoudl happen), you're certainly not legally responsible for her emotional state.

You are not liable at all. If she has already said this to you, then she is aware you want out and this is just drama and her trying to hurt you back. You are not bound by any international law. For example, a person has a heart condition and walks down the street and a dog suddenly barks loud, and that person dies of a heart attack, is the dogs owner responsible? No

No way you are, and please do not let anyone hang this type of nonsense over your head. You have your own decisions to make and your not the one to give her the unfortunate medical condition she has. Never let anyone force you into making decisions. I might suggest letting her parents know ahead of time and then wish her the best of luck and keep moving forward. That isn't very fair the way she put you on the spot like this. Get on with your life!!! Best of Luck!!!

Uh.....NO. If you want to break up, break up. If the stress of breaking up would cause her to have some sort of reaction, the stress of a LDR should have had her in her grave by now.
Her inability to handle stress is not your problem or your fault.
Throw the BS flag - That's just manipulative, control freak hype she is tossing your way.

Your own guilt is getting to you...Remember this! You are bound by NOTHING. As a human being you were born with FREE WILL. And because of that some bad things happen. That's life. You have to accept that and learn to release your guilt and try to be happy with the remaining time of your life.

It sounds like she has more than a lung problem to manipulate you like that, that is not fair to you, if you don't want to be with her don't, you're not responsible for her reactions.

No you wouldnt, she is a drama queen and she is doing to hold on to you. I would get out as soon as possible, you dont want to be with someone you dont want to be with. And its crazy to be forced to be with someone you dont want to be with.
