I'm guessing you mean orientalism as defined by edward said in his book Orientalism. Orientalism is based upon the idea that westerners view the orient in terms of the other. He sets up westeern viewing as a sort of dichotomy between us and the other.

Below is one of many sit4s you can find about this if you google Edward Said.
Said believed that the Western world undertook a campaign to "enter, explore and exploit" lands in the "Orient" or the east., in other words, places Europeans hadn;t gotten to yet.
By distancing the cultures and people they found, Western explorers could bring home the idea of an exotic, yet not "fully human in the way to be a white person means to be human" people. Orientalism is an excuse to treat people differently-- like pets or possessions-- than one would treat another white person.
Read Edward Said. It's his stuff and he says it best

Said's Orientalism is a tendentious book full of non sequiturs and other logical fallacies that basically said that no Westerner can study the East except by his permission. As a consequence of that book a large number of decent, honourable people suffered persecution, humiliation and physical injury. It is a thoroughtly EVIL book and it's a pity Said didn't die 60 years ago. No doubt his mother would have been sad but scholarship and the world would have been spared a great deal of trouble.

Orientalism means associated with Asia or Asians. Chief characteristics are its diversity (in terms of people: Malays, Chinese, Indians, Japanese, etc), non-hegemonic (throughout history, people of Asia, with the exception of Japanese do not have ambition to conquer lands of neighbouring nations), and Asians are generally not racist.
