I am a computer programmer, and am not all that successful. It helps if you are constantly learning and keeping up to date with the latest things, which are always changing. You can be a good programmer but program in an obsolete language, and you will not be in high demand. A lot of work is now being done in India. They have a lot of smart people who are willing to work at very low wages.
Some people do very well at it, but I think you need to constantly keep up and learn the latest languages, have your own business, or be very good at the business/consulting end.
At least financially, I would have been better off skipping college and becoming a NYC garbageman (sanitation worker, as they call it). I would have saved a lot of money in college costs, and would probably make about the same with overtime and have much better benefits.
I don't mean to discourage you, and in fact the way things are going in this country, most career choices are not good ones. I would suggest going into a field where you can't be replaced by a low wage worker from India, China, or Russia. Possibly the medical field, maybe teaching (they don't make a lot but the job is secure), law enforcement, etc.

I'm actually in it right now. At least where I go, the entire first part of CS is java programming, so it doesn't really do you much good unless you intend to stick with it. Half-knowing how to program is completely useless. if you do stick with it, you can write some cool programs, but that takes a year or two.The upper levels deal with the real science. The course itself is interesting, it just really sucks having to learn how to code if you haven't done it before...
