A paradox is not a contradiction. A paradox appears to be a contradiction, but a paradox has a solution. A contradiction does not have a solution. A lot of riddles are paradoxes (usually based on wordplay), for example: When is a door not a door? (Apparently a contradiction), solution: When it is ajar. Sherlock Holmes in a criminal case would remove the contradictions, reduce the problem to a paradox, and solve the paradox. (When you remove the impossible, no matter what is left, no matter how improbable, must be the truth!). Some people (including teachers and professors and journalists) misuse paradox and contradiction as synonyms, but again a paradox is not a contradiction. Its just important to always remember that a paradox can be solved.
