I respect elders because they have been through so much in their lifetimes that makes them respectable. My grandparents are both 86 years old. My grandpa was in the Army during WWII and both lived through the Great Depression, WWII, Vietnam, ...
I personally can't imagine how hard it was for them, and I respect them for all they've done.

love and respect and upbringing and traditions...
love because they are families or friends...
respect because they've gone through so much...
upbringing because if the parents respect the elders, the children will learn to respect the elders too....
traditions is that in some asian countries, the elders are the most powerful person at home, and everyone must give in to the elders.. you will be despised and is shameful to show disrespect to the elders...

I believe it is because they have experience, and have accrued wisdom over the course of their life. Being respectful is to show that you value someone - and our elders have seen so much in their lifetimes.

Respect for the wisdom of your elders leads to harmony. :-)
They are your teachers, listen to what they have to say. Treat them with due respect, and you in turn will be respected. Yeah, I know... loads of people say, "But the old ways are old fashioned". Not true. Listen. Apply to your own heart what is meaningful to you and integrated it with today's issues.
What you take in to your own heart is what makes you who you are.

Old people are now visitors in this world, and they go through pain and illness most of their time, they were once young like us and one day we will be old like them, I will expect the young one to take care of me just like I take care of them now.
Old people become like babies again, they become very touchy and sensitive, they worry about death all the time, they do reserve respect because one day we will sure miss them!!

Personally it's because I love them and I respect them.
They are a walking encyclopedia. To ignore them or push them aside is terrible, but it is a bigger loss to you. They have a strength of character that is rare these days.
they remember more than any of us have ever learned.
