As mentioned....clutch to shift to neutral, then again to put it into the desired gear. Generally only used on a tractor-trailer. Most drivers don't use the clutch at all, but if they do, they will double-clutch to make the shift. We will most often use it when down-shifting while going up a hill. Blowing a shift then is not a good idea, as you will lose any momentum you have, and may have a hard time finding the right gear again, then you are stuck on a hill with the transmission in neutral....BAD IDEA!
By the way....to pass your class 'A' (transport truck) road test here in Ontario at least, you MUST double clutch EVERY gear change, or it will be a red mark on your test.

A technique for changing (usually downwards) gears on a vehicle which does not have a synchro-mesh gear-box.
Press down on the clutch pedal, shift the gear lever to neutral, take your foot off the clutch pedal and press on the gas pedal. This speeds up the gears revolving inside the gearbox.
Then press down the clutch pedal again, ease slightly off the gas but not right off, and move the gear lever to the lower gear position. The gear should engage with very little (or with practice, no) noise, then take your foot off the clutch pedal again, and you are ready either to accelerate uphill in the lower gear, or to take your foot off the gas to use engine braking.
With practice, also, it takes longer to read these instructions than it does to do the manoeuvre ! You will probably never need to know this, of course, unless you are a classic car enthusiast - almost all cars of the last forty years have had full synchro-mesh gearboxes, and automatics don't even have a clutch pedal !

Double Clutching, or more precisely, Double DE-Clutching spins up the ENGINE connection within a MANUAL transmission to match the speed of the gears in the ROAD connection in the transmission. This is needed when you downshift from higher to lower gears in a NON synchronized transmission. Pretty much all manual transmissions have synchromesh gears nowadays.
The synchros can wear out and you get the classic Grinding of Gears when they do.

Double clutching is done like this,
Push in the clutch, shift to neutral, release clutch in neutral, rev match, push in the clutch again, and put the shifter in to the next gear.
Double clutching can be used for both upshifting and downshifting.
This technique is common in the trucking industry.

youve gotta do that shifting some of these big old iron beasts like 10 wheel drives the transmissions dont want to shift when your holding the clutch so you gotta kinda pump it halfway through to let it get in to the next gear. and when your taking off from a stop or powering out of a corner and are burnin out to much giving a little clutch to get grip again and keep going

It's a technique for making a difficult shift without grinding gears.
You shift into neutral, pop the clutch out to get the clutch spinning and then pop it in again and do your shift.
Most manual transmissions these days don't need it, but the old three-speeds were hard to downshift to first while you were in motion.

When you smoke and you give a double drag before you inhale. ussually something beginners try out. "Canyou double clutch." WOW, that guy can double clutch." we use to speak like that. when I was a teeenager

exactly what it says.....push in clutch to shift out of gear, re-clutch again to put into next gear.
todays cars you just push in once and swap gears
