They don't realize that they have a problem. If they talk about how bad the abuse is, then they have to admit that they have a problem that they need help with.

It could be a number of reasons: don't realize that what they are doing is really abuse because it was prob done to them so it is 'normal' to them; if they admit to how bad it is, they would have to get help and they aren't ready for the help yet; think it's their right to be abusive; and many other 'excuses' for minimizing the abuse.

As long as the one who is being abused realizes that abuse is abuse is abuse, and can find a way to get away from it for good, then all the better for the abused. IF the abuser ever does realize that what he/she is doing wrong and that they must get help to stop, and they actually get the help, then there may be a chance that they will stop, but that isn't always true.

Yes. Most abusers actually blame the person they are abusing.
Example: Abusive husbands blame their wives for not cooking their food the right way, not having the table set the right way, saying the wrong thing, not washing their clothes the right way. Anything that goes wrong is always the wife's fault, so the abusive husband has to "teach" her a lesson.

Because anyone who is doing something wrong doesn't want to face up to it. And if they are caught they surely NOT going to face up to the severity of the thing that they have done.

Minimizing is a human behavoior. Not good, but it is a way with dealing with things that people don't want to face.

I agree with Amy, except they don't want to ADMIT they have a problem. I think most often they do realize it.
