What is the formal charge on the O atom in NO+ ??

So N brings 5 electrons and O brings 6 and the postive charge means there is one less than that total.

So there are 10 electrons to go around.

So there is probably a lone pair on each atom with a triple bond inbetween.

That means oxygen has 5 electrons when it should have 6 so the formal charge on O is +1

The N has a 3+ charge, the O a 2- charge giving an overall charge of 1+

first you should find the lewis dot structure

:C(triplebond)O:
the colons are electron pairs

Then count up the number of electrons around each atom
remember the electrons are shared in the bond so for each bond 1 electron is used for each atom

O has 2 electrons as well as 3 bonds on it
this means it feels the effects of 5 electrons
since O has 6 protons, the formal charge is +6-5= 1
